AN: from this prompt.

It's the end of the year. Every which way he turns, students and parents are gathered; a collection of smiles, shouts and tears.

Graduating students are in their special graduation robes - all black, like their regular school robes, but with trimming around the hood: deep blue for Ravenclaw, crimson red for Gryffindor, and so it goes.

Albus Potter stands to the side, half-waiting for his family to reach him, and distracted all the while. (A roll of parchment is crushed in his fist, suffering the fate of a nervous young graduate.)

He's supposed to be happy. Relieved, even. But all he feels is impossibly sad.

He can see Scorpius Malfoy with his parents (and grandparents), a blush across his face as they give him the praise and pride he's always wanted.

His hand almost twitches for want to hold the other boy's. He wants to tell him how proud he is, too. That the year might be over, and Hogwarts as well, but everything else will stay the same.

Even if he's not sure it will.

"Al," says a voice, coming up to his side and nudging him. "Congratulations."

Albus turns to Rose and smiles, the faraway look fading fast from his green eyes. "You too, Rosie," he says.

She hugs him.

"You know," she starts, "you look more like you're attending a funeral, not a graduation."

"Everything is going to change."

"Of course it will," says Rose. "That's what growing up is all about. But -" She follows Albus' gaze, then squeezes his arm. "But not everything has to change for the worse. Some things get better, they grow up too."

Albus turns and meets Rose's eyes.

"You know."

"Of course I know. I always know."

"That I think I love him."

"I know you do." Rose smiles. "You just need to tell him."
